Project Update #4 - 1st Stretch Goal: Themed Character Sheets — Rules Spotlight: Wargear & Kit
over 1 year ago – Sat, Apr 15, 2023 at 11:24:39 AM

To arms, freedom fighters!

We are very close to reaching our first Stretch Goal for Nations & Cannons themed character sheets! Custom character sheets has been one of the most frequent requests from our fans and we're very excited to be able devote resources to creating one. Laid out to track all your firearms, wargear, and ammunition, with extra space for tool and language proficiencies that are crucial in any historical campaign. The sheets will be available to all backers at any level as a printable and form-fillable PDF. Our next stretch goal on deck is a beautiful bookmark ribbon. Stay tuned! we'll be announcing our third stretch goal once the 1st one is unlocked!

Rules Spotlight: Wargear & Kit

The Wargear system allows players to carry multiple loaded firearms into battle. In Nations & Cannons, flintlock firearms deal a tremendous damage but most are limited to a single shot. A crafty player’s loadout could turn the tide. A gorget worn around the neck increases your AC, while riding boots improve your mobility when mounted. A hunting pouch increases the damage and healing of your poisons and poultices, and wearing a fine powdered wig lets you challenge your enemies to a compelled duel!

Project Update #3 - FULLY funded! — Historical Reenactors and N&C
over 1 year ago – Fri, Apr 14, 2023 at 10:04:10 AM

Well met, Continentals!

We just crossed the 100% mark! I can't express deeply grateful everyone here at the Flagbearer Games team is for your contributions. The American Crisis is our dream project, and one that we quite literally rolled the dice on! It's been an uphill climb every step of the way, but the level of support we're seeing by funding in just 3 days really shows that thoughtful, in-depth historical TTRPGs can succeed!

We're really proud of our approach to the material culture of the 18th century, which is baked in to every page of Nations & Cannons with the help of the reenactors on our team. We've spent more hours than we can count scrutinizing the tiniest minutia of historical equipment in the Core Rules and Flintlocks & Fulminates; and the result is robust black powder mechanics that are streamlined for ease of play, but still have a lot of depth to accurately simulate period warfare.

This weekend (4/15-16), our designers Pat Mooney and Keith Stratton will be setting up a sutler tent at the Battle of Bound Brook reenactment event in New Jersey. If you happen to live in the Garden State, stop by and have a chat with us! Keith was the principal researcher and designer of the Black Powder Blunders Misfire Deck, and he has this to say about his experience...

Team Member: Keith Stratton

Reenacting, being populated by detail obsessed nerds, naturally cross-populates with TTRPGs. There's plenty of people I know, alongside myself, deeply involved in role playing games. My unit leader, Ben, has more than once told the story of showing up on Gary Gygax's door in the 80s and asking him to run a game, and being invited in instead of being immediately kicked off the property.

It was not difficult to come up with a list of things that could go wrong with black powder weapons, having either seen or experienced myself a dozen ways for a flintlock to not work correctly. It is hard to capture the feeling of black powder getting into the deep cut in your hand that you received last volley when you fiddled with a razor sharp rock under heavy spring pressure, but at the same time I never know I only failed the Munitions Kit check by 1.

Project Update #2 - 75% funded! — Extinct Animals of Colonial North America
over 1 year ago – Thu, Apr 13, 2023 at 12:01:51 PM

Felicitations, patriots!

We're in the endgame now. We're almost 80% of the way to funding now, and looking forward to sharing more details on our upcoming stretch goals in the next few days! I'm sure you're all curious about some of the creatures and adversaries that will be included in The American Crisis. We'll have more detail on enemy soldiers in a future update, but for now let's talk about the Animal Kingdom instead of the British Empire

As part of a collaboration with Lucas Zellers, we're publishing new beast stat blocks for notable creatures in colonial North America! Dangerous mountain lions and rattlesnakes might threaten your party in the woods around Saratoga. But we're also telling the stories of some animals that are sadly no longer with us, like the Heath Hen, sea mink, and passenger pigeon, and the impact that they had on daily life during the Revolutionary era.

Our friends at Mage Hand Press have made an entire compendium of extinct animals; both as well-researched and historically accurate stat blocks, as well as fantastical imaginings as magical creatures...

Projects We Love: Book of Extinctions

The Book of Extinction is a new way to spark interest in biology and conservation: using D&D monsters! This supplement teaches readers about real extinct animals and presents them as engaging and magical monsters with captivating artwork. Back the Kickstarter today!

Project Update #1: 50% funded! — Shanty-Hunters Author joins the team!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Apr 12, 2023 at 11:28:26 AM

Salutations, revolutionaries!

As of writing, The American Crisis has just crossed the 50% funding mark and shows no sign of slowing down! We have been working on this project quietly for over 3 years; revising our rules, running playtest sessions at GenCon and PAX, and slowly putting all the pieces together for this day! We're so glad to have you folks along for the ride; we think we've got something special here,  and hope this is just the first step in our journey.

The dark horse in this campaign so far has absolutely been the Poor Richard's Almanac companion booklet. We're really excited that so many y'all want more Ben Franklin witticisms in your life, because frank-ly, this almanac is gonna be a ton of fun to write. To that end, we've partnered with one of the biggest names in the historical TTRPG scene...

Tristan Zimmerman joins the party!

Tristan Zimmerman (he/him) is an Ennie-award-winning game designer. He’s best known for Shanty Hunters, a TTRPG about collecting magical sea shanties in the year 1880. He’s also known for the Molten Sulfur Blog, where every week he presents something cool from real history or folklore, then shows how to file the serial numbers off it so you can drop it into the RPG campaign you’re already running. He is a U.S. Navy veteran.
